Denmark’s citizenship knowledge test is called the Indfødsretsprøven. It tests knowledge of Danish society, culture, history and Danish values. The written test contains 45 multiple-choice questions and lasts 45 minutes.
How the 45 questions are divided
The official structure has three parts: 35 questions within the scope of SIRI’s study material, 5 questions on current political, social or cultural events, and 5 questions on Danish values.
Current official study material
The edition updated in August 2026 applies to the winter 2026 and summer 2027 tests. It has six chapters covering history, democracy, the economy, Denmark and the world, cultural life and theme topics.

Who is the test relevant to?
The Indfødsretsprøven demonstrates knowledge of Danish society, culture, history and Danish values. Passing it is one part of the citizenship framework; it does not by itself grant Danish citizenship. Other citizenship conditions exist, and some applicants may fall under specific exceptions or dispensation rules. Use this guide for test preparation, and use the Ministry's official citizenship pages for questions about your own application.
A realistic way to use the 45 minutes
With 45 questions in 45 minutes, you have about one minute per question on average. Answer questions you know first, flag difficult ones, and leave a few minutes to check that you selected only one answer for each item. Our full Denmark mock exam uses the same overall time limit so you can practise concentration and pacing without notes.
Understand the three sections
The 35 study-material questions can be prepared systematically from the official material. Five current-affairs questions require awareness of events and issues that have attracted substantial attention in Danish news media before the exam. Five Danish-values questions carry an additional passing condition: at least four of those five must be correct, alongside at least 36 correct answers overall.
A four-week preparation framework
- Week 1: study history, democracy and the economy; summarise key ideas in your own words.
- Week 2: study Denmark and the world, cultural life and theme topics; then mix topics in practice.
- Week 3: maintain a current-affairs log, practise Danish values and sit one previous official paper under timed conditions.
- Week 4: take full mock exams, classify mistakes by topic and concentrate revision on the weakest areas.
